Artificial intelligence (AI) is finally arriving in anti-money laundering (AML) compliance. It has been used successfully in other areas of the financial sector for some time. The black box problem, in particular, has been the bottleneck to wider adoption of AI solutions in compliance. Regulators and supervisors are encouraging financial institutions to use more innovative technologies in the fight against illegal financial activities. Many institutions are starting with hybrid models of AI-assisted and rules-based processes to meet the regulatory requirements of traceability and usability in court that are important for compliance. But what are concrete, sensible use case scenarios for AI in the fight against financial crime? What is actually hidden behind the umbrella term artificial intelligence? Is it still a black box? What progress is "Explainable AI" making? And what factors need to be taken in account for the entry into AI to be successful?

Jörg Bienert is Partner & CPO of Alexander Thamm, but also President of the German AI Association, a member of the BMWI's Young Digital Economy Advisory Board and a respected keynote speaker in the field of data and AI. After studying technical computer science and holding various positions in the IT industry, he founded ParStream, a big data start-up from Silicon Valley that was acquired by Cisco in 2015.
Christian Oedingen is Principal Data Scientist at Alexander Thamm. The graduate business mathematician has been involved in the investigation and prevention of white-collar crime for more than 10 years and has also worked on a wide variety of data analytics issues during his time at the consulting firm pwc.
